Fallout spoilers follow.

Life goes on after the world ends in Fallout , and that's also true for Fallout itself, which is set to continue now in season two after the first one blew up in every way possible.

Prime Video announced (on April 18) that their extremely successful video game adaptation is returning via this message from producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy:

"Praise be to our insanely brilliant showrunners, Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] and Graham [Wagner], to our kick-ass cast, to Todd and James and all the legends at Bethesda, and to Jen, Vernon and the amazing team at Amazon for their incredible support of this show. We can’t wait to blow up the world all over again."

Showrunners Robertson-Dworet and Wagner added: "Holy sh*t. Thank you to Jonah, Kilter, Bethesda and Amazon for having the courage to make a show that gravely tackles all of society’s most serious problems these days — cannibalism, incest, Jell-o cake. More to come!"

The renewal didn't really come as a surprise given that Fallout has already become one of Prime Video's most-watched original series since Rings of Power, ranking in the top three most-watched seasons ever on their streaming platform. Plus, who wouldn't want to see more cannibalism, incest, and Jell-o cake on screen anyhow?

When will Fallout season 2 be released?

No official release date has been confirmed just yet, and if exec producer Jonathan Nolan is right, we could be in for a fairly long wait:

Speaking to Collider, Nolan bemoaned how long these epic shows can take to shoot, explaining that:

"Part of it is just the ambition of these shows, right? From shows like Game of Thrones and then Westworld, onwards, that practical photography means it takes time. But I am as frustrated as anyone that it takes this long to get these shows on the air. So, we are poised and hopeful that we’re not gonna have to wait quite that long, should we be so lucky."

There was a two-year gap between the start of filming for season one in July 2022 and the premiere's arrival in April 2024, but if filming starts quickly enough and everyone gets into high gear, there's a sliver of a chance that season two could arrive by the end of 2025.

Who is in Fallout season 2's cast?

Assuming everything goes to plan during production for season two, expect to see the following cast members return in new episodes of Fallout:

• Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean
• Aaron Moten as Maximus
• Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean
• Moisés Arias as Norm MacLean
• Walton Goggins as The Ghoul / Cooper Howard
• Leslie Uggams as Betty Pearson

The fate of Sarita Choudhury's character Lee Moldaver was left a tad ambiguous at the end of season one's finale, but even if she snuffed it for real, there's still plenty more story to uncover for her when it comes to the show's numerous flashbacks, which will also likely include Frances Turner as Cooper's wife, Barb Howard.

What is the plot of Fallout season 2?

Given the scope of the games and the world that's been created on screen as well, it's safe to say that there's plenty more story left to tell. Walton Goggins echoed this idea recently in a chat with Men's Health, in which he explained that:

"We’ve just scratched the surface, to be quite honest with you. According to the writers, they thought they would be much further along in the story by the end of season one. But it was just too much to unpack."

Executive producer Jonathan Nolan told Gamespot that there is "one locale in particular" that he's keen to explore in season two, and it looks like he's talking about New Vegas if the final moments of season one were anything to go by. It's where Hank MacLean ends up, and where he goes, his daughter Lucy is sure to follow.

In the same article, co-showrunner Graham Wagner mentioned that season two could feature genetically created monsters known as Deathclaws, which are famous in Fallout lore. They were originally supposed to appear in season one, but the team decided to save "one of the most iconic elements of the games" for season two "to be able to do it properly."

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Ella Purnell addressed Lucy's future in the show now that her outlook has been changed so much by her time on the surface:

"That's the big question, is she going to maintain that positivity, or rather that moral compass? Does she still believe people are inherently good when she meets all of the characters the Wasteland has to offer?"

"I'm really excited for people to see where she ends up at the end of the season," added Purnell. "I think it's a spectrum and weirdly every scene, I think it lands at a different place in the spectrum. We'll see."

Is there a trailer for Fallout season 2?

You might as well start building your own fallout shelter while you wait, because it's going to be a little while until new footage for season two arrives. Think early 2025 at the very earliest, and that's assuming the world doesn't end for real before then.

Fallout is available to stream now on Prime Video.
