My love for a delicious cup of morning coffee with flavored coffee creamer is vast and will stand the test of time. My husband and I are big coffee drinkers. In fact, there are plenty of times where I curl up in bed at night and immediately start looking forward to tomorrow’s coffee. It’s just so good.

If you are like a lot of coffee drinkers then you know the cult favorite creamer is coffee mate. It’s just so good. But have you looked at the ingredients or worse the price? It’s just so bad! We drink a lot of coffee so that means we go through a lot of french vanilla creamer. With inflation I was just sick of paying an arm and a leg to fuel our coffee mate coffee creamer habit. That is why I decided to figure out a homemade coffee creamer recipe.

What are the ingredients in Coffee Mate creamer?

If you look at the ingredients on a bottle of Coffee Mate creamer you are going to see a whole list of yuck. From the Coffee Mate website the original recipe has the following:

  • WATER
  • COCONUT OIL
  • SUGAR
  • 2% OR LESS OF SODIUM CASEINATE (A MILK DERIVATIVE)
  • DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE
  • MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES
  • ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR
  • BETA CAROTENE COLOR

On the same website the french vanilla flavor, our personal favorite, has these ingredients:

  • WATER
  • SUGAR
  • COCONUT OIL
  • 2% OR LESS OF SODIUM CASEINATE (A MILK DERIVATIVE)
  • MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE
  • NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS
  • BETA CAROTENE
  • RIBOFLAVIN (FOR COLOR)

How do you make Coffee Mate liquid creamer?

Making your own homemade creamer is incredibly simple and does not require any of those strange ingredients that you see listed above. The complete printable recipe with all of the ingredients and instructions can be found at the bottom of this blog post.

You will need:

  • sweetened condensed milk
  • whole milk
  • granulated sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • A whisk
  • A small saucepan
  • Airtight container (I have one like this or you could use a mason jar)

The first thing you need in order to make your own homemade coffee creamer is to gather all of your ingredients together. Luckily for this recipe you will only need the four simple ingredients listed above. Next, you follow just a few easy steps.

In your small or medium saucepan over medium heat combine the sweetened condensed milk, regular milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk all of the ingredients together while they heat up. You do not need to simmer your mixture. Just allow everything to become warm enough that the sugar dissolves and everything is incorporated together nicely.

Be sure not to allow the milk to scald. That would not make for a delicious cup of coffee at all. It would almost be as bad as the time that I accidentally flavored our coffee with vinegar. I am not sure my husband has really and truly forgiven me for that one yet.

If you want to try different flavors of creamer you could substitute other extracts or natural ingredients in place of vanilla extract. There are as many options as you have imagination for. I think adding a few teaspoon pumpkin pie spice for a pumpkin creamer would be great. You could also try a teaspoon of almond extract or 1-2 teaspoons of coconut extract as well. Even using some cocoa powder for a mocha flavor would be a great way to experiment with your own creamer.

Personally, I love the french vanilla the most. I know that this recipe calls for a lot of vanilla extract (12 teaspoons vanilla extract or 4 tablespoons) but I have found that to be much more cost effective than using an actual vanilla bean. In order to truly capture the vanilla flavor found in the coffee mate version I really had to go big here.

I want to encourage you to play around with this recipe in order to suit the needs of you and your family. If you do not like the extra added sugar feel free to scale back. You can really make this french vanilla coffee creamer recipe your own.

Other substitutions you might consider in replace of the whole milk:

  • heavy cream / heavy whipping cream
  • oat milk
  • full-fat coconut milk
  • unsweetened almond milk
  • skim milk

Storing Your Homemade French Vanilla Creamer

Store your homemade creamer in an airtight container in your fridge. You creamer should last around 7-10 days but I can honestly say that ours is always used before I have had a chance to really test that out. Take note of the expiration date of your milk when you are making the creamer because that could have an effect as well.

Luckily, this creamer is so easy to make that even if you run out of it quickly you can make up another batch super fast. You do not have to drink your coffee black unless that’s just a thing you like to do.
